This non-surgical procedure cleans the plaque and tartar deposits around your teeth and gums by an ultrasonic device, supporting you in maintaining a healthy dental hygiene and preventing dental issues.
Following are the answers to several of your questions on dental scaling:
During a dental examination, if we observe plaque and tartar deposits, we suggest scaling/cleaning to remove the buildup. If this is not removed, the deposits keep accumulating and hardens leading to gum diseases, teeth loosening and cavities in teeth.
This is a myth. As mentioned earlier, we remove the hardened deposits from around the teeth and gums which gives a feeling that something is missing. In fact, if you let the deposits harden, it will eventually eat into the bone and gums causing tooth loss. By timely removal of these deposits, we let the bone and gums heal and become healthy.
As a first step, Dr. Anjana thoroughly examines the mouth, gums and each teeth carefully to check for any dental issues and if required proceeds with scaling. This procedure is undertaken with an ultrasonic scaler that creates sonic vibrations to break up the deposits, tartar, plaque and biofilm from the surface of the teeth above and under the gum line. This takes around 30 - 40 minutes to complete and after a final check, you are good to go
Scaling is a routine procedure to remove the deposits around the teeth and gums. However with time tartar and deposits can reach beneath your gums and roots and that is when a deep cleaning is required. Deep Scaling uses both ultrasonic and manual instruments to scrape of deposits and bacteria from the root surface under your gums reducing inflammation in your gum tissue. This helps the gums reattach to the roots.
You may feel tooth sensitivity after scaling which is normal and Dr. Anjana will prescribe an anti-sensitive toothpaste if required. Sometimes you may experience bleeding which is again normal and will go away as the gum heal.
